Ensembles

 

Band instruction at CMS is offered on the following instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion. Percussion students will be required to rotate between learning mallets, snare drum, bass drum, and other miscellaneous percussion instruments.  

 

The following is my schedule, as well as ensembles that will be offered during the 2018-2019 academic year:

 

  • 0 Period – Jazz Band

  • 1st Period – Prep Period

  • 2nd Period – Prep Period

  • 3rd Period – Concert Band

  • 4th Period – Advanced Band

  • 5th Period – Intermediate Band

  • 6th Period – Beginning Band A

  • 7th Period – Beginning Band B

 

Jazz Band 

This course is a performance-based class designed for any student who is also signed up for 6th Grade Concert Band, Intermediate Band, or Advanced Band.  Placement will be determined by the instructor through an audition.  In this course, a variety of jazz music literature will be studied and students will have a demanding schedule for performances and events throughout the year, including festival performances and out-of-state competitions.  Advanced jazz musicianship will be the focus as students build on their note reading and rhythmic skills while focusing on improvisational studies and performing various styles of jazz that include swing, Latin, and rock. Students will learn self-discipline through home practice and rehearsal sessions.  Students will also be provided the opportunity to learn accountability and commitment to a team. As a course that meets every day at 7:00 AM, students must provide their own transportation.

Beginning Band 

This course is a performance-based class designed for any student who is either new to band or wishes to learn a secondary instrument. In this course, a variety of musical literature will be studied and students will have multiple performance experiences throughout the year. The fundamentals of instrumental musicianship will be taught, reviewed, and emphasized throughout the course. Students will develop their note reading and rhythmic skills while focusing on tone production and instrument technique. In addition to the large group rehearsal every other day, students will have the opportunity to receive additional instruction during lunch and/or club times.  Students will learn self-discipline through home practice and rehearsal sessions.  Students will also be provided the opportunity to learn accountability and commitment to a team. 

 

Concert Band 

This course is a performance-based class designed for any student who took band in 5th grade. In this course, a variety of musical literature will be studied and students will have multiple performance experiences throughout the year. The fundamentals of instrumental musicianship will be reviewed and emphasized throughout the course. Students will continue to develop their note reading and rhythmic skills while focusing on tone production and instrument technique. In addition to the large group rehearsal every other day, students will have the opportunity to receive additional instruction during lunch and/or club times. Students will learn self-discipline through home practice and rehearsal sessions.  Students will also be provided the opportunity to learn accountability and commitment to a team. 

 

Intermediate Band 

This course is a performance-based class designed for any students who have successfully completed Beginning Band, 6th Grade Concert Band, or the equivalent. Placement will be determined by the instructor.  In this course, a variety of musical literature will be studied and students will have multiple performance experiences throughout the year, including festival performances and possible out-of-state competitions. Intermediate instrumental musicianship will be the focus as students will continue their quest to build upon note reading and rhythmic skills while focusing on more advanced tone production and instrument technique.  In addition to the large group rehearsal every other day, students will have the opportunity to receive additional instruction during lunch and/or club times. Students will learn self-discipline through home practice and rehearsal sessions.  Students will also be provided the opportunity to learn accountability and commitment to a team.  Several students from this ensemble may be selected to represent the school in the Northern Zone Nevada Music Educators' Association Honor Band.

Advanced Band 

This course is a performance-based class designed for any students who have successfully completed Intermediate Band or the equivalent. Placement will be determined by the instructor and an audition process may be necessary.  In this course, a variety of musical literature will be studied and students will have a demanding schedule for performances and events throughout the year, including festival performances and out-of-state competitions. Advanced instrumental musicianship will be the focus as students experience further development of note reading and rhythmic skills while focusing on advanced tone production and instrument technique.  In addition to the large group rehearsal every other day, students will have the opportunity to receive additional instruction during lunch and/or club times. Students will learn self-discipline through home practice and rehearsal sessions.  Students will also be provided the opportunity to learn accountability and commitment to a team.  All students will be expected to audition to represent the school in the Northern Zone Nevada Music Educators' Association Honor Band. Several students from this ensemble will have the chance to represent the school in the All-State Band.
